Default Dining table with natural edge bookmatched figured maple boards

Just wanted to share my most recently completed project, a dining table for myself

Of course, all my woodwork is available to purchase but the design and execution of this piece was not limited in any way..

Some thirty years ago, a group of local woodworkers organized a bulk purchase of figured maple from British Columbia.

When I arrived (late) to help unload the trailer, I discovered these two spalted and cracked boards in a snow bank.

They were in pretty bad shape but I felt I could do something with them.

Fast forward to a year ago. When I was putting the shop to bed I spied these boards leaning against the wall and the idea of making a dining table for myself out of them popped into my head.

I stabilized the cracks with West System epoxy and gave them a good soaking with Watco Danish Oil. The oil helps slightly to firm up the softer spalted areas and enhances the grain. Spalting is a fancy term for rot, the fungus leaves dark black lines in the wood.

The boards on their own were not wide enough for a table top so I decided to insert a row of ceramic tiles with a slate texture.

On the maple frame members, I used sponge applied black gesso to give the finish a bit of texture. The gable pieces are figured Bubinga.

All parts have been sprayed with a conversion varnish.

A shot of the joinery on the gables...

    Cheers, Don

Yes, and the 24-70mm f2.8 tethered to a 17" laptop running ControlMyNikon.

The software allows for setting a focus point anywhere in the frame in live view before capture and then viewing the results full screen.

I've gotten to the point, even with my glasses, I can't judge critical focus on the back screen of the camera, sigh...

    Tell me all about it....
I can't use live view at all! If I have to use it I have to put on my strongest reading glasses.

Damn, in Atlanta an upscale shop would ask $6,500.00 for that table! I would like to be your rep.
